NGOs

The early 1990s brought about a recognition of the importance of non-governmental organisations(NGOS). NGOs were found to have closer ties to on-the-ground realities in developing countries and, perhaps more important, to be able to deliver development aid considerably more cheaply than states or intergovernmental organizations.

While there are a number of variations to the definition of NGOs, they are basically non-profit organisations focused on activities in developed and developing countries, operating at the local level in cities and towns, and targeting low-income groups for their development.

While the term NGO is sometimes used interchangeably with other terms as grassroots organizations and social movements, the NGO role usually goes well beyond assistance to people in dire distress. NGOs have become players in the medium-to-long-term development of the country or region where they are based.

Recognizing the importance of understanding the nature of NGOs and their activities, and in recognition of their contributions to nation building and development, HaabaMedia has dedicated this whole section to defining NGOs and their activities, a forum to discuss, debate and disseminate information on their core responsibilities.

With a basic objective of assisting NGOs in enhancing and improving their programmes and activities, HaabaMedia hopes to effect a better understanding of NGOs in general, and to enable NGOs to network at local, regional and international levels.
